How do I add styles to my columns?

I am using the pre-built standard template for Umbraco 8 (the one that comes with installation), and I am using the grids to add content in columns.

When I click "Settings" on a columns, I see there is a "Styles" field, see attached image.

But how do I add styling to a column, for-instance a background color?
