Unfortunately it wont work with Media items. The data-type uses the NiceUrl method to get the URL - which doesn't pick up the "umbracoFile" path (e.g. for the PDFs). Sorry.
I'll look at adding this as a feature-request for the next version.
Is this referring to role-based protection on media and PDFs in the media section? I am wondering if this is possible as well, or if you have to create role-based pages and restrict the media to specific users that way.
