More information: this happens with and without the CropUp package.
I wanted to chime in that I am getting the same error. This does not happen when storing data as CSV, only as XML.

@Arie: I am running the same as you - Umbraco 6.1.6 via Nuget and DAMP 2.6.
Strange. I'm also running DAMP 2.6 with Umbraco 6.1.6, but I don't have this problem.
