There is currently no way to determine whether an event is recurring or not just by looking at the tree. It would be great if they could have different icons.
You could do something like that yourself probably. If the event calander is using the web api you can change the values from the web api with the example in this issue: http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-2670#comment=67-15418
There it's already possible to change the media picker start node per node so you could probably also do the same for icons. Just need to find out what web api url is called.

you're right. Think there really should be a another icon for recurring events. Will implement that in the next version.
Also willt try what Jeroen suggests and see if that is useable.
