Is it possible to place a marker without having to use the serach function first?
It seems that the only way to place a marker is to use the search. This took me about 2-3 minutes to work out for myself. It won't be obvious to users either.
I second this. Not user friendly. 3 out of 3 people I tested this with, were lost at this point. Especially aftre we have set "default location" parameter to be within the city so search was not necessary. "Default location" setting should also put marker on default location
Not a solution as such, but a work-around I use is just to detail how to use the data-type in the description field of the property - so that users at least have a little bit of guidance via some text. Worth doing as a short-term measure perhaps?
Following up on this, just released v2.1.0, which has a new feature of auto-selecting the first marker in the results. Saves doing those extra clicks :-)

Auto-selecting doesn't update zoom value.
