    Any plans for IE6 support?

Disclaimer: I hate IE6 with a passion, but anyone who does work for government or large organisations is likely to run into this issue.

Hi, i've been using uComponents a lot lately, mainly for the Multi-Node Tree Picker which is a fantastic data-type - well done on great job.

Unfortunately we have some government and public-sector clients who still use IE6. Currently the MNTP (I haven't checked out the others) data-type renders badly in the Umbraco backend and unless I can get MNTP looking ok i'm probably going to have to revert to Ultimate Media Picker for these clients.

Much as I hate to be the one to suggest this, I was wondering whether you would consider adding backwards support for IE6 to the project?

    Hi Rick,

Since MNTP is Shannon's baby, he'll need to make the final call.  My advice is don't hold your breath for IE6 support.

I know that we didn't test any of uComponents in IE6 ... the idea was to develop components on the latest version of Umbraco (and browsers).

Even if we did decide to support IE6, I doubt it would make the v2.0 release (which is still a couple of weeks away) ... and v3.0 is a few months off.

My advice would be to bite-the-bullet and go with Ultimate Picker. (Sorry)

    - Lee

Google, and even microsoft have dropped IE6 support (SharePoint 2010 no longer supports IE6, and even explicitly warns users about this when they try anyway)

If your customers insist, I usually come up with a list of other fortune 500 companies that no longer do either :p

    Some names that get attention:

    Gmail
    Youtube
    Digg
    Microsoft SharePoint 2010
    Google Docs

    Hi Rik,

It's the UK government... they wont drop support for IE6 - they say its TOO costly for the tax payer!

Private companies/organisations on the other hand, yep - we have more influence.

    Cheers, Lee.

I'll have a look when i have time (but there's not a lot of it going around at the moment). I'd probably say it might not look perfect, but we can probaby get it close. Saying that, this is so long as IE6 will support the JS implementation, etc...

OR, if you want to download the uComponents source and see if you can come up with a patch for it, we'd be more than happy to get it into the core.

    Cheers,

    Shannon

Rik, Lee - it's for an NHS organisation so there's zero chance of persuading them to upgrade until the government tells them to.

Shannon - thanks for considering it. I've already downloaded  the source as the everyone who's seen MNTP has been really impressed and i'd like to avoid dropping it. I think i've got a fix in place that includes a couple of CSS edits and a one-line edit to the MNTP server control. If it looks ok and others are interested i'll see about submitting a patch.
