Facebook Provider.. Is it possible to pick an album rather than a single image?

    Hi Guys,

My first post on here. At last! :-) I have been following the development of this project for a while now and am keen to contribute. The functionality I'd like to create for Umbraco would be an umbraco version of this entire package for word press.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/facebook-photo-fetcher/

The universal medai picker and the facebook provider seems to be the closest we have towards an implementation like this so far, unless I've missed something. According to photo fetcher description it should be possible to access images from any album you have permission to view be it from your personal page or a fan page, or any other album you have been given permission to view, this is conrtary to what I have read on this forum regarding the facebook media picker. It does appear that this functionality is possible. So I wonder why there is a defference in opinion here or does this work a completely different way?

I'm certainly keen to create a fully automatic photo album picker that allows the admin user to pick an album they have uploaded to facebook either from a personal page or their fan page and have it displayed on the front end with a jquery lightbox, perhaps further down the line with facebook comments / like's etc. I'd be keen to assist in the development of this as I think it would be a very key piece of functionality for umbraco which doesn't yet seem to exist but does on other platforms. I only use Umbraco for my projects so this is something I think we'd all like to see.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Can anyone point me in the right direction of something that can do this already? Or are we starting a new project here !?! :-) If so, is the universal media picker and facebook provider the key to this?

    Comments welcome.....

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

The next version of the Facebook Provider does allow you to 'pick' an album and you are then free to render the album with its photos as you like.
I cannot remember if comments and likes are part of the current dataset that is returned, but I can quickly find out and post back.

The only reason why the new version has not yet been released is because I was thinking about adding the ability to create a new album via the Provider, but I might save that for a later version.

Thanks for the reponse Morten, just to say great work and really impressed with everything so far especially with the scalability of this project too. I'm keenly waiting for the next release then which sounds perfect for my project.

I shall base my system on the Universal Media Picker then with the facebook provider installed and put together a jquery front end. I think with the hugeness of social networking in web apps these days anything we can do to allow for commenting/liking would be a huge benefit for modern social enabled we sites/apps. Do let me know if you find anything regarding comments.

My investigations so far have led me to setting up my website as a facebook application and allowing for facebook login through the site, this therefore opens up facebook api to you and I think I can achieve likes/comments etc per photo this way. I may need to have a unique URL for every picture too so that the like's can be tracked to a particular point of reference. It would be good to be able to link to it to likes and comments that have been made on facebook itself so they link through to the site also, it'd be good for site exposure I think.

Anyway we'll be able to use it as a great example of usage for the Universal Media Picker plus it it could be a great test bed for future features. Let me know when you are ready with it and I'll give it a trail run. :-)

    Thanks

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

I haven't forgotten about you, but I'm moving my private repositories to Bitbucket so once that is done i'll add the updated package.

Any news on the updated facebook provider?

I would love to be able to pick a facebook album instead of just an image.
