We're looking at doing something similar - we previously built a custom solution in v7.1.X but it overrides some of umbraco's js controllers so we're looking to implement something a little cleaner. Let me know - thanks!

The source code for this is available on Github and appears to be under the MIT license.
So, based on that I would say you are fine to take it an modify/reuse etc :-)
