there are some starter scripts for setting up membership, but there are many ways to do it - which is why this package don't really touch on it, and sort of assume you are managing that bit in your own way.

Can people post directly from the frontend?
Quick question guys: Can users post directly from the fronend on the forum or do they have to log into umbraco backend and create a new forum post?

people can post to the forum from the front end, but you will need to have a working membership system so that they can log in.
members are like umbraco users but for the front end of your site. https://our.umbraco.com/Documentation/Getting-Started/Data/Members/index-v7
