Does this example site select / show the correct content based on the users / browser language?
Or do you have to externally or manually redirect / navigate to the correct language first (e.g. domain.com/nl/)?

It doesn't do auto select at the moment. It's not part of the example project. The user needs to navigate to other URLs them self.
You could do an IP check and based on that get the country and language and do the redirect.
