I guess I misunderstood something: "Empty Snapshot, no changes detected "

    Hi Kevin,

I thought the snapshot would give me a complete snapshot, but at the moment all I get is the changes since the previous one.

"Empty Snapshot, no changes detected "

Is there a way to generate a full snapshot without deleting the existing ones?

    Thanks

    Hi Andrew,

yeah as you've seen snapshots capture the changed between them, so its not everything just the things that have changed that end up in the snapshot.

Its a good idea though, maybe we need a 'full snapshot' button somewhere that would do just that (we might be able to sneak that into an upcoming release)

in the meantime you have a couple of slightly less good options:

You could use the 'Download All' button in snapshots to get everything would look like with all the snapshots together. This merges all the current snapshots together so you get a single 'snapshot zip' file which is the site as it would be now.

you could use exporter to do a similar thing and download the site: if you selected the root content node, and export with "children", "dependencies" and "files" all ticked you essentially get a sync-pack with all of the files required for the site at that time.

you can use plain-old-usync to perform a clean export, then go onto the disk of the site and rename the uSync/v9 folder or zip it up, this will then become a point in time version of the site.

All in all we are looking to tidy up Snapshots a bit in upcoming releases, so a 'full snapshot' button is certainly a good idea. we where also thinking about some form of incremental snapshot install, so giving people a way to apply the snapshots at build/deploy time but we're not 100% sure how that might work yet.

It makes sense, I was just surprised.

The thing with download all was that I had deleted some snapshots but not all :)

Is "exporter" another package? I don't see an option on the root content node.

    I'm mostly using publisher.

With snapshots, I assume I could include the actual media files using the "Folders" list (As long as we don't have many media files). We use persist volumes in Elastic File Storage, so will probably use commands in AWS to sync media rather than including them

    :D

    Hi Andrew,

Exporter is installed - but as a tab under the main uSync Dashboad (i am not sure why we did it like this - there was logic at the time).

    enter image description here

We are just adding the 'Full snapshot' option today - (just released for v8 - and testing the v9 release now)

In terms of media, both Publisher and Exporter fully support cloud based media (because they deal with the media files as part of a media 'item') . Snapshots is much more about file handling and therefor you can't include media that isn't on disk in a snapshot ☹️

i would say snapshots is intended for a much more 'system' level approach to backing up site changes (like doctypes etc). if you are working with content then exporter and publisher are much more accomplished at coping with all the nuanced little things like cloud storage etc.

(but yes in many cases, moving a lot of physical media in the cloud is often faster with the native cloud tools, you just have to remember to also sync the media items in Umbraco to get things to appear. )

I our current setup (new version of our own company's site) the media file appear as though they are on disk using a linked folder.

I have the uSync/v9 folder in source control and import settings after I deploy to staging.

I plan to remove v9/Content and v9/Media from source control soon and just use Publisher for content and media

I'll explore the options with Exporter when I get a chance
