Long answer: Gallery and portfolio have both additional attributes for each entry (such as caption and category) so you can't just point to a set of media files and add those as entries. I've been asked about this before, so I'm thinking of creating a new, simplified image gallery section that will have no captions and no categories, but this will probably be in the next release.
I would like to keep the caption and category but make them optional. That way after adding a large batch you could then go in and tag them one by one later.
In the bulk add process, may I suggest simply taking the filename of the image (less the extension) as the caption. Try to de-camelcase it, or use it as is. Also applying spaces to groups of numbers. For example Screenshot001.jpg would become "Screenshot 001" and MyVacation001.jpg would become "My Vacation 001".
Having an ability to aim it at a folder full of images to quickly get the gallery up and running with the ability to go back and tweak specific images with captions/categories as time permitted would be a win-win.
As always, I appreciate the work you have and are doing. Thank you.
Quite correct. I have the images already uploaded. Thats not the issue. Its the presenting them en masse on the front end of the website that I am finding a laborious task.
Have you made in progress on this I love the starter kit and want to using it for my Scout Group but we have such a large collection of photos creating a page per photo will take way to much time!

Image Gallery (or portfolio) from Media Folder?
Is there a way to add a whole folder of media files to either the Image Gallery or the Portfolio widget?
I have hundreds to add and I am not looking forward to one at a time. Is there a mass import of some sort?
I tried selecting a folder when adding an image but it didn't appear to work.
Short answer: Unfortunately not at the moment.

Have you tried Zippy Media?

I think his issue is specifically with the gallery and portfolio sections, not with the way to bulk upload images in Media.
