Firstly, great package. We've deployed it on a number of our sites and the Content Editors love it.
My problem now is that our latest client runs a managed desktop and their IT department are insisting on an MSI installer for the app (and air runtime) so they can ship it out to the appropriate desktops sutomatically.
I've done a bit of searching online and appears that this can be done...but all a little over my head.
Have you ever had to do this? Are you able to create and publish an MSI version of the runtime and DMU?
It's not something I've looked into myself, as for me, the beauty of AIR is that you can install and launch straight from within Umbraco. I've had a quick look myself, and it should be possible, but I just need to find the time (I'm a little busy this week). What version of DMU are you looking to install? The current standalone release? or the one that comes pre-installed with Umbraco 4.7?
I agree, the beauty if it is the one click install! Bugger them with their managed desktops!
The site is 4.7 so I would assume that one. If there is a newer version (standalone one) and that's easier, I don't mind upgrading it (which I assume is as easy as droppping in files??).
No worries, re: timeframes...I'm just glad you're willing to give it a go!
I'ev taken another look this morning, and it seems like I'll need to get permission from Adobe to allow me to distribute the Adobe AIR runtime in this way:
I've got approval, and had a look at this last night / this morning, but am struggling to create the installer. I know what it needs to do, but I'm unfamiliar with creating installers, so I'm having to look into it. Unfortunatley it's just taking time.
It's for DMU v 2.0.5 so you'll have to let me know if you need a different version (Umbraco 4.7 comes preinstalled with 2.1). You'll still need to have DMU installed on your Umbraco instance, so the installer is just for the DMU air uploader app.
Hey Matt, I've just done some testing on the exe before sending it off to the client and I can't get it to work properly. Analysis goes as follows:
1. Uninstall existing DMU and Air. Install from exe sucessfully installs both DMU and Air (same version numbers) but cannot log in when running DMU directly. Also, when going to the media section in umbraco the DMU dashboard shows "install" not "launch".
2. Uninstall the exe version of DMU and Air. Install via the media section dashboard and everything works OK. Double check version numbers and the same as exe.
3. Uninstall just DMU and NOT Air. Install via exe (this time only DMU as Air still installed). Everything works OK! Can run DMU directly and "launch'" from dashboard.
Therefore, my assumption is that the exe version of Air is not installing correctly or something wierd is up with it.
Are you seeing the same thing or does it work for you?

Hey Matt, congrats on the new job at HQ!
Obviously I'm hoping its not toooo crazy busy and that you might get some time soon to look at building this MSI for me?
TIA

Hi Trevor,
I'ev taken another look this morning, and it seems like I'll need to get permission from Adobe to allow me to distribute the Adobe AIR runtime in this way:
http://www.adobe.com/products/air/runtime_distribution1.html
I've submitted a request, but it can take up to 3 days for them to say yes/no as to whether they will allow it or not.
I'll take another look once I get a reply.
Cheers
Matt
Do you need any information about the client that wants to roll it out...or were their questions more about you as the software developer?
Keep me posted.
Cheers, T
Hey Matt, has Adobe come back to you yet? If so, what's your workload like to try and pump this out?
Cheers, T

Hey Trevor,
Does it have to be an MSI? or will an EXE do?
Cheers
Matt
If its easier to make an exe...then that would be great. I'm sure their IT dept can handle an exe. Cheers T
Hi Trevor,
Cool, in that case, give this a go:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/138129/DesktopMediaUploader.2.0.5.zip
It's for DMU v 2.0.5 so you'll have to let me know if you need a different version (Umbraco 4.7 comes preinstalled with 2.1). You'll still need to have DMU installed on your Umbraco instance, so the installer is just for the DMU air uploader app.
Any probs, let me know.

Matt
Yay!
Sorry to be a pain in the arse tho...but it is a 4.7 build...any chance of that version?
Thanks, T.
Ok,
Give this one a go then:

Matt
Sweet...thanks.
I'll give to their IT dept and see how they go.
I owe you a beer (if I make it to codegarden next year!)
Thanks, T

Hmmm, I'll have to try and take another look at it this evening.

Yeah Matt, sorry to keep bugging you, but have you had a chance to see if you get the same issues I do when installing the exe?
Hi Matt,
Version 2.1.0 which you are talking about above is unavailable here: http://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/desktop-media-uploader .
And the link you provided is now broken.
How can I get this version?
Kind regards, Iulia
