A client of ours has come across the Desktop Media Uploader on the media dashboard in Umbraco but has been unable to get it running, and neither have I.
Initially they tried installing the version from the project page, which it turns out is incompatible with Umbraco version 4.7.2 (you aren't able to login).
After an uninstall of that version, I've tried installing it from the media section of Umbraco but with no luck.
When I try using chrome to do this, I have the same problem mentioned on another thread, where it continually comes up with the message "A download error occurred. Try to download again?". Following the fix suggested in that thread (disabling the Shockwave player in the chrome plugin settings) had no effect.
When I use either IE or FireFox, an Adobe Air install window opens on the desktop, but with the message:
"Sorry, an error has occurred
The application could not be installed. Try installing it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author."
My client is having the same error message appear when trying to install. From what I've read this is a very generic error and could be caused by any number of issues. How can we found out what is causing the problem? I've also tried updating Adobe Air on my machine but this had no effect.
The site is running on IIS7, we have the following entry in the System.WebServer section of the sites web.config, as advised on other threads I've come across:
Are there perhaps some missing files from the Umbraco directory on our site? Is there another way that the correct version can be installed? Any ideas are much appreciated.
The desktop media loader is a part of the Umbraco core in v4.7.2 - Can't remember when it exactly made it into the core.
However you're not the first person to experience some issues installing it - The issue is not Umbraco but the technology that the package is based on. I think you should have a look at this post where Tom Fulton provides a very good answer to his own question about how he managed to get it working.
Thanks for responding. Please could you clarify which post you are referring to?
I did manage to get round the Chrome install issue as discussed here. However, the same issue still occurs with the Adobe Air install window appearing:
"Sorry, an error has occurred
The application could not be installed. Try installing it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author."
Unfortunately I have already looked at that post and it is a different issue to the one we are experiencing. The description of the error would suggest that it is an issue with either our Umbraco installation or the desktop media uploader itself, rather than Adobe Air, Flash etc.
Does anybody have any other ideas, or should I be posting this in a different part of the forum somewhere?
Otherwise I might have to find some way of hiding the install option on the media section. It is slightly fustrating that these extra plugins have been included as part of the core and advertised to users, but that they won't always work properly out of the box.
Unable to install

<remove fileExtension=".air" />
<mimeMap fileExtension=".air" mimeType="application/vnd.adobe.air-application-installer-package+zip" />
</staticContent>
Are there perhaps some missing files from the Umbraco directory on our site? Is there another way that the correct version can be installed? Any ideas are much appreciated.
