In umbraco 4.5.x upload fields throw an error if they don't have a file selected regardless of mandatory state.

Experienced this aswell... Anyone any solution ?
Tested an upload field in 4.7 on a content node and experienced no problem with both mandatory and non-mandatory settings.
Can you provide details on how to reproduce this error?
Tested:
No Validation
Regex
Mandatory
Regex + Mandatory
If you look here : http://kraamzorglc.zzzzzzz.xxxxxxxxx/formulieren/solliciteren.aspx
If you replace the zzzzzzz with 'live' and the xxxxxxxxx with 'ned' and 'finity.com' you should be able to see it, and you can try it there..
