Is a manual for version 7 in the works? Our first websites running on version 7 are coming out in the following weeks and this could really help our client's content editors!
I'd love to see a version of this for Umbraco 7. There are videos and documents online for developers and for configuring Umbraco doctypes and templates and macros, but almost nothing for the content editors.
Would be great to be able to hand over a generic user manual to the end client, explaining how to log in, edit pages, add media and youtube videos etc.
One way to be able to see a version of this for Umbraco 7, would be to become a great community citizen and contribute. You could start a shared Google Doc and get cracking at writing the manual or if too busy, you could get in touch with clients and suggest they co-fund a copywriter to help with the manual.
We'd love to take the task in the HQ, but we're stretching all resources at the moment to just keeping the codebase up to date. For a long time, we've really wanted to improve documentation and governance in the project and we've been trying to get more partners to contribute financially to the project by going gold (EUR 850 / mo) but unfortunately only a fraction of our partners have done so. We'll be increasing our sales efforts in an attempt to improve the financing in the project.
Is there a way to donate to the HQ at smaller values / one-off amounts? I'd love to go gold and reap the benefits but as a freelancer it's beyond my economic ability to find that much every month.
But I think there would be a lot of freelancers like myself who would gladly push a High five button on our.umbraco.org and send over a smaller donation to you guys, in recognition of the work you do.
And hopefully I'll be able to put aside some time to write a manual. If anyone has got one they've written for v7 and would like to share, it would be super to see what they've got.
I have to prepare one for a corporate client - I'm rewriting the version 6 document and producting new artwork - let me know if you want a copy of the finished version (should be done, tested and proof-read by the middle of June).
I think the community will send you a lot of love and #h5yr...and probably loads of beer if you're attending CG14 if you release it as a package on our - or perhaps try asking Matt to include it on the same package page.
Excited to see what you got and lots of love for wanting to share it :) #h5yr!
Hi Graeme, I have a client training session in 2 weeks and really would like to give them some sort of editor’s manual other than the v6 manual. How far have you progressed with finishing the manual? Do you have an unfinished version in Word that I can continue for you? I’d be happy to finish it off and resend it back to you.
I just really need to have a v7 version for this training session.
Working on our first Umbraco site (Umbraco 7), and this is my first post too so be gentle :-)
We were just about to get stuck in to producing a simple manual for our web editors when the penny dropped that partly the point of choosing open source was to see what else is already around in the community and start from there.
If anyone has made a start on this process already (@chris, I just requested access, or @graeme?) we'll be happy to make any additions we make available back to the community. It will be a perfect way to explain to my sceptical colleagues the benefits of open source!
We've been working on a v7 editors manual for a little while at CAB Studios and aim to release this very shortly. Very recently used it in a training session for a new client so pretty happy with it.
Already contacted Matt about it and he's pretty happy for us to go ahead and share it. Of course we would welcome any contributions or feedback and won't put any restrictions on it's use.
I've just given you access to the manual-in-progress on Google Docs. A lot of people have asked for access, but perhaps like me they've been a bit too busy to contribute as of yet!
Let me know if you have a chance to make some updates, would be very keen to have a nice, generic document that anyone in the community can use to help their clients edit in the back office.
Just how far along is the Google doc? Could I get access?
As I say we have a completed manual we are happy to share but don't want to tread on any toes if this is nearing completion. Unfortunately, it's not in a format that can be contributed to but we can probably port it to a Google doc at some point.
Just make the request using whatever email you need to and I'll grant it.
You'll see it's not all that far along; one contributor has made a start but it's been stalled a little. If you're able to make some updates that'd be much appreciated!
Matt - I replied to your post earlier and included the Google docs link again for you to request access, but the forum tagged it as spam, presumably because of the link.
If you check back earlier in the thread you'll see the link there - go ahead and make the request and I'll get you editing rights.
Thanks Chris - have got access now. I see what you mean about it not being very far along.
I'll share what we have produced as it's going to take some time to port it to a Google doc. Hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow or latest early next week to get it shared.
Chris, I've requested access as well - hoping to find an easy way to start translation (into Danish), but I don't know if Matts version should be "merged" first?
Version for Belle?

Hi Chris
I just made a request for access :)
/Jan
So you did - I've added you and the others that have already asked for access :o)
Nice one!
I request the access, me too!

Hi Chris, hoping I too can be given access. I have made the request.
@Graeme following up on the v7 manual, is there even a draft version that one can use as a basis?
I have sent access request to Chris sometime ago, but havent heard back.
If you can share, even a draft version, that would be very much appreciated.
Cheers!
Kind of - but my "editors' guide" is running way behind schedule I've had to build a module to integrate sharepoint with Umbraco first...
What's the best way to collaborate on something like this? I'll be free from the 11th for a few weeks, so I could concentrate on it from then.
Is there something that you urgently need help with?

Hi Matt
Great to hear there is a v7 manual that passed a successfull training session!
Do you mind if I can take a sneak preview in its current state? my email is akeilox [at] gmail . com
Would greatly appreciate if you can send me a preview copy.
cheers!

I'd be happy to help edit / update artwork for v7 if granted access to the Google doc.

Bridgette Huff
Super - you've got access now. Thanks!
Super - you've got access now. Thanks!
Hi Matt
Would you be able to send me a copy of the manual that pass the training session, as it is, as I could really do with one soon?
Many thanks in advance
Hi guys! I requested an access (under [email protected])
Sorry for the delay but for those that were asking for the Umbraco 7 manual we've created you can now grab this from the package page:
http://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/umbraco-7-editors-manual
Hope to get this into the Google doc for collab when we can or else anyone is free to take the content and drop it in themselves.
Welcome any feedback in the meantime and we'll update the doc as we go.
Chris, I've requested access as well - hoping to find an easy way to start translation (into Danish), but I don't know if Matts version should be "merged" first?
is working on a reply...
