How can uCommerce support a Department Store?

I'm developing a website for a department like store, and I would like to know if uCommerce is a suitable solution. uCommerce don't seem to have a sales contact.

    Basic Scenario:

    • Bricks and mortar department store
    • Store sells on behalf of merchandise owners
    • Common check-out (in the store)
    Requirements:
    • Single catalog of products in Umbraco website
    • Each product is attributed to merchandise owner (and they receive an account for sales)
    • Creation of Product Code, which can be printed on merchandise
Please let me know if uCommerce is flexible enough to be able to satisfy these requirements - otherwise I may have to build it custom from an open source project.

    Hi Todd,

That shouldn't be a problem. You can add a field to the product with the merchant's id or account. I'm assuming that the product code is supplied by the customer, and should be added to the order?

To clarify you'd create a new product definition in the settings section, which contains the fields Lasse mention. When creating a new product you'll add a piece of information which tells you which merchandiser the product belongs to. An alternative would be to use multiple catalogs, one for each merchandise owner, which is query at checkout time to add information to the order about which merchandiser account the product belongs to.

On question I've got for you though is whether products are maintained by the reseller or the merchandise owners?

    Thanks.

Thanks Lasse and Soren. Since posting this, I suspected that I could extend a Product to contain a link to the merchant - Umbraco is very handy in this regard. When looking at uCommerce, I viewed it like an old PHP shopping cart, where you're only customising the presentation, clearly, the Umbraco platform allows much more customisation, with uCommerce giving you the tools required to add commerce features. I also thought that it would be possible to host multiple catalogs, but I didn't think that this would be the nicest approach.

It looks like this is the direction I'll go for.

Adopting the MerchantID per product, route - How would I restrict access to each Merchant, so that they can only edit, delete, create their own products? I'm thinking of simply letting them use the Umbraco admin area to do this. If this is not possible, I will just have to create a front end page for Merchants.

    Hi Todd,

At the moment, you will need to create a seperate product editor for the merchants, as it is not possible to restrict access the certain catalogs in the backend.
