Since I love to work with umbraco so much, I'm currently researching if uCommerce would be a good bet for my next ecommerce project. It looks great so far.
I was wondering if anyone has a rough estimate of how large the database could grow for a catalog of around 2000 products, structured in quite a lot of categories? I'm asking so I can make an estimate of the hosting requirements.
Also, it's not clear to me what the differences are between the Free edition and the Pro and Enterprise editions. What exactly are the limitations of the Free edition?
It's difficult to say how large the database will be. Depends greatly on the number of fields you store for each product and of course of the amount of content you add. The easiest way is to set up your products the way you want them and then generate a couple of thousand products and check the size of the database file afterwards.
The difference between Free and Pro is basically tha Pro enables international selling by supporting multiple currencies and languages. We're working on updating our site with a nice comparison matrix. In the meantime I can hook you up with a spreadsheet that outlines the differences between all three editions. One of our uCommerce sites does have around 2600 products including variants. The whole MSSQL database for this site is around 600 MB. It was launched in march 2011.
