    Charity/Free edition limitations

    Hi,

Do you have a list of the limitations of the donation/free version of uCommerce?

The website mentions marketing limitations - does that mean the specials/discounts logic is somehow crippled?

I've installed a copy of uCommerce on a public IP and it makes no mention of requiring a licence. Does this mean that the features I can see are what are available in the free version?

    Thanks in advance,

    Antony Briggs

    Hi Anthony,

Soren from uCommerce will probably be along with a definitive answer.

However from what I know uCommerce became free at version 2.0, there are 2 free versions, the one for download and the 'charity' edition essentially these are the same but one gets processed through Umbraco Deli hence giving funds back to Umbraco and also uCommerce give the rest of the money to Charity.

As for the differences between either free version above and the paid for version I think you can only run one 'catalog' from the free version (enough for most stores) and you do not get access to the marketing foundation.

    Hope that helps

    Rich

Ah, I see. The installation of uCommerce I have put on a public IP is displaying the developer banner.

So does the free edition need a licence from the uCommerce team to remove the developer banner? And installing this licence will remove access to the marketing section meaning that there is no discount/coupon functionality in the free edition?

If that is the only limitaton (and the single catalog - of which I'm not sure what the implications are? Maybe single currency?) then that sounds like a good compromise from the uCommerce devs.

I'm an independent developer and my clients are usually independent brick and mortar retailers with a budget of between 1k to 3k (GBP) for an e-commerce solution so the full asking price for uCommerce is not an option.

However releasing a solid framework (albeit with limited documentation, not unlike Umbraco itself!) with some features reserved for the paid-for editions seems to be very much in the spirit of Umbraco.

Well done guys! I look forward to working with uCommerce on my next eCommerce project.

    Hi Rich,

Fresh off the press: version 2.0.2.

    Why do you ask?

I wasn't sure  if the development banner still displayed at all since version 2.0.

It does on my install and I currently have access to the marketing section in the back end.

Oh, and I can create new catalogs in the back end also.

All of which leads me to believe I need a licence key to change the install to a free edition. (although I don't know how the licence would be installed as I can't see a gui for this in the back end - must get stored in a config file I guess)

    Hi Antony,

Thank you for your interest in uCommerce. Please get in touch with me via e-mail (sslATucommerceDOTdk). I can send you an Excel spreadsheet, which details the differences between the uComerce editions.

In the meantime here are the big differences:

uCommerce Free Edition: One currency, one language, one catalog, unlimited categories and products.

uCommerce Pro Edition: Multilingual, multiple currencies, Socal Commerce, and Marketing Foundation.

uCommerce Enterprise Edition: Multi store, brand management, distributed caching, store specific discounts, and in the future uConnector for integration.
