Is uCommerce a good fit for my project?

    Hi,

I have a client who provides bespoke services for clients across the country. Order and service fulfilment are not handled on the web but they would like to offer an online payment option. The idea is to create individual products in uCommerce for each customer (50 - 100 per week) with a unique Id number and specific price. The user can access their product via their Id number and pay online.

The attraction of using uCommerce is that administration of this is all handled in the management area of the site together with all the other aspects of the site. uCommerce is a good product and it reflects well on us to have a nice professional looking solution but I'm concerened it may be overkill when a much simpler solution may be hiding in the undergrowth.

My thoughts were to set up categories/sub categories based on years/months and simple product details that serve to confirm to the user that this indeed is their product (charge) and they can safely pay for it. Does anyone have any views or thoughts on such a solution.

    Thanks in advance.

    Roger

    Hi Roger,

I was actually considering a similar solution for our own licensing store. In our case we need a way to do quotes for custom business deals. It would work in almost the manner you describe.

I don't believe using a tool for the task is overkill (but I might be a bit biased here :)). Basically uCommerce will help you with management of your "quotes", the ordering process, and the payment. You can easily spend a hours upon hours implementing this stuff.

Also I've seen a lot of examples of the assortment expanding once a store goes live. With uCommerce in place it would be very simple to add new product types if the requirement arises.

You could take a look at the PayPal payment buttons, which is the simplest way to take payments on a website without bringing in additional tools.

    Thanks Søren,

I think we have convinced ourselves this is the right way to go. Still only a free edition I'm afraid, we will get a pro licence for you one day soon I'm certain !!

    Regards

    Roger

Perfect! You might want to consider the uCommerce Gold Partner program before you do :)
