We made a package at one of our hack-days last year called Page State Icons - which you can specify an XPath expression for whether the tree node's icon is overlayed (or changed).
That's a nice package. I haven't tested it, but the packages could well work together. We've played with the idea of doing stuff with icons and custom classes, but we first wanted to release a version in which it is possible to format the text in the tree.
We totally agree that it would be powerful to have control over icons and text. We would like to even have more control with styling, like in using colors, italic and stuff in specific situations, but we couldn't get this to work quickly since we encountered errors when creating new items (A potentially dangerous Request ...). This might be something for the future too.
In combination with Page State Icons
Hi!
We made a package at one of our hack-days last year called Page State Icons - which you can specify an XPath expression for whether the tree node's icon is overlayed (or changed).

Could be some overlap in ideas ... I think it would be powerful to have control over both the icons and text of the tree nodes. :-)
Cheers, Lee.
