    Themes, Skins Templates for Umbraco

    Greetings Friends

If I was to start an online shop selling Umbraco premium themes (skins), would I need permissions from Umbraco ? Are there any restrictions I should be aware of .. etc

I would greatly appreciate some information regarding this matter.

    Thank You.

    Ciwan.

    Thank You Lee.

From the two links, I gather that Umbraco has no issues with me selling templates/skins as long as my domain name is not an infringment of the name 'Umbraco'.

    Hi Ciwan,

Correct, they need to protect their branding/trademark.

I think the biggest reason that no one has offered premium skins/templates is due to the nature of the content structure - as Tim explains in his reply - everything is bespoke. Unlike systems like WordPress, where you know there will always be a post title, content, categories, tags, etc. With Umbraco the structure/schema is decided by the developer/editor.

There are efforts for creating a skin for the various starter kits, it would be worth taking a read of those too:

    Cheers, Lee.

    Thank You Lee.

Yep I understood Tim's explanation. And I think I will do what you suggested. Concentrate on the most commonly used Starter Kit, and theme for that functionality. Anything extra, and I would have to charge extra .. simples :)

Thank You, Giving Umbrac 5 an install now. It's MVC, I'm sure I'll like it :D

Ah yes, the skinning documentation is v4.6+ specific ... not sure how skinning will be achieved in v5.  Try dissecting the DevDataKit package that ships with it.

All the best with your venture!

Thank You. Now that Umbraco is MVC, you'll see a lot more of me. :)

Just for a reference to some themes for Umbraco can have a look to BindTuning.com

Sells themes for Umbraco, all customizable to fit your branding.

In 30 minutes have a sharp looking Umbraco theme installed and running vs. 1 to 2 weeks of custom development.

You also can try the trials installing in your enviroment before buying a theme.
