Where to install Umbraco if not allowed in virtual directory?

    Hi,

I'm not able to install Umbraco on my local machine due to problems with my MSSQL 2008, so I'm going to have to develop on a test domain on my live server.

I have a Windows VPS server, so I should be able to do this, but I want to make sure it's done correctly so as to not affect any of the other live domains on the server.

The first thing which springs to mind is that I usually set up new domains on my server through a Plesk control panel.  This creates a folder under IIS which, as far as I understand it, is a virtual directory.  So I can't install Umbraco in there can I?  If not, where else would it go?

    I'll get there eventually!

    Thanks all...

    Dan,

Bit of incorrect info! If you're using Plesk to set up the domains, Plesk is generating the folder structure for you and pointing the home directory for the website to the generated folder. You're free to use whatever home directory you like (so you can leave the Plesk defaults), you just need to make sure umbraco installed at the root of the web.

Example: if Plesk has created the directory /vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs (which is the default), then the umbraco files/folders must reside in that folder. Plesk takes care of setting the home dir of the new website to the folder suggested before.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    /Dirk

Thanks Dirk, so if I upload the Umbraco files into '/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/' it should run and not affect the running of any other domains on the server?

Dan, exactly, if you want to run umbraco from domain.com. If you wish to run umbraco from a subdomain of domain.com, then your home folder looks slightly different. In that case, your home folder is...

    /vhosts/domain.com/subdomains/subdomain/httpdocs

Indeed, it won't affect any other domains on the server (Plesk creates a new website for each new domain/subdomain)

    Cheers,

    /Dirk
