    Intermittent 404 errors on website

    Hi there,

One of our development websites is experiencing intermittent 404 faults that seem to be linked to any changes made within the content of the site. The client will update the website as normal, will publish, but after publishment might find that their home page is no longer available. On one occassion the client updated and entire sections of the website were unavailable, returning 404 errors.

Tracing this bug, we discovered that the node url's would change, without the admin interfering or editing them in any way. The only way to return the website to normal is to republish the entire site, using the option provided by Umbraco.

The development website is also hosted externally by a group called Pulsant, who we have had an experience before in technical faults with Umbraco websites. We think there is a possibility the Umbraco config might not be loading correctly, resulting in the error.

Does anyone know anything that could explain what might be causing this error, or has anyone had any experience before with Umbraco websites hosted on Pulsant experiencing weird and intermittent errors?

    Thanks very much.

    Hi William

Do you know if permissions have been setup correctly on the webhost? Something might go wrong during the save and publish process since you can recreate the website by republishing the xml cache.

Do you know if any interaction with the Umbraco API has been made hooking into the save and publish event for instance?

And can you tell us what version of Umbraco is being used?

It would also be a good idea to check the umbracoLog table in the database or if you're using a newer version of umbraco you can go to /app_data/logs and see if it contains some usefull information that could give a hint about what the problem is.

If you can access the server somehow it would also be a good idea to see if you can access the event viewer.

    Hope this helps.

Does your site have an architecture similar to what's described in U4-1780 possibly?

    Good luck to you!

    Hello,

Apologies for taking so long to get back. It looks like the following are causing the problems:

    http://our.umbraco.org/forum/using/ui-questions/22106-umbracoHideTopLevelNodeFromPath-not-working-(randomly)?p=1

    http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-1780

The website does have HideTopLevelNode set to true and the descriptions within these forum posts match the problems we're experiencing.

Unfortunately there appears to be no log of why this is occurring. It is entirely random. Further more, the forum posts have no solution to the problem.

Can anyone follow up with a possible solution to this? The strange thing is that this setting is on by default for most of our websites, but only this website suffers from these 404 errors.

    Thanks very much.

    William
