Do style sheets have to be saved in the backend?

Do stylesheets have to be saved via the backend or can they just be saved at the file level?

We have a designer who likes to use an external CSS editor and save the files directly.  He says that some of his files have not been updating.  I was thinking this might be due to him not saving in the backend...or maybe they are being cached.

    Any ideas?

Is his external editor pointing to the css files in your umbraco install?  Is your umbraco install on a server if so he would need to access those files directly and if he has permissions to save then save.  however if someone else is editing from umbraco and they then save they will potentially overwrite what he has done.

He has direct access to them.  He's just getting messages while he's editing the file that the file has been edited.

We are using 4.5 if that makes a difference.

So if he has direct access his workflow should be fine, right?

Looks like he does not have permissions to edit. When you say direct access you mean shared drive/folder on another server?  Or is it sitting locally on his machine?

Lots of editors which can edit the css files directly by ftp. This has nothing to do with Umbraco. You can just edit the files via ftp directly without any problem.

He does have permissions to edit.  I bet someone else was just editing the file.

This share is in a shared network drive, everyone has access.
