    It's still there:

    http://our.umbraco.org/projects/collaboration/ucomment/using-ucomment

There seems to be an issue when a project is saved it now it forces you to add a category which changes the URL of the package and the forum. Unfortunately the forum link on the project homepage isn't updated.

I hate to be the guy who complains all the time...

But the forum functionality here outright sucks and is not doing the umbraco project any favors. We have support and posts spread out over at least 3 different generations of the forum. The forums richtext control is flaky at best and the "submit" may or may not work depending on what you have typed. The umbraco documentation is a patchwork of incomplete documents and instructions that leaves out major steps. We have 3 or 4 different generations of umbraco with varying levels of docs all mixed together. What applies to what? The forum (site) search function is flaky, as is the ability to view "page 2" in some threads.

The need to cut and paste URLS to read the uComment forum is icing on the cake. If I sound furstrated, I am. While umbraco is an amazing tool, this site and the documentation are a train wreck.

    If I sound frustrated...

Anyway, I am having trouble finding information regarding uComment and 4.5.x

I have just upgraded a site to 4.5 and want to add uComment. Will it work and what version of .NET needs to be used?

And I get frustrated when all of the information requested is on the project homepage:

    http://our.umbraco.org/projects/collaboration/ucomment

    A few quotes:

"Note: Package is built for .net 4 - You can download the source and build for .net 3.5 if you wish."

    "Download UComment, 1.1.1
Compatible with: Version 4.5.x with the new schema"

The attached files also has a link to a download of the previous version. "Compatible with: Version 4.0.x schema"

    Darren,

It occurs to me that so many of you guys who work daily with the umbraco development are not seeing how cumbersome implementation is for those of us who are not immersed in it daily. The product is great, but the information is very obsfucated.

From this point of view, the documentation is scattered and hard to use. Information is hard to come by and must be pieced together from incomplete docs (both here and at developers websites), forum posts, 3rd party blog posts and project wiki's. Broken forum links and flaky forum software make things 10 times worse. If you (or somebody) would simply FIX the FORUM LINK on the PROJECT HOMEPAGE, then I could have easily asked the question IN the forum and not frustrated you.

    Back to my question:
I asked becuase the "project homepage" is somewhat ambiguous with regard to what will or will not work.

Is that 1.1.1 ONLY with NEW SCHEMA or will it work with 4.5.x and legacy schema?  Is 1.0 the same as 1.1.1 other than the schema support?

The project homepage lists both 1.0 and 1.1.1 but the codeplex link only lists 1.0 and there is scare information at codeplex.

I have upgraded to 4.5.x but am still using the OLD schema. So it appears that I am somewhere in between your releases of 1.0 and 1.1.1

    Furthermore,

The "project homepage" still has a broken link to the project forum, as are the links in the email sent when you reply.

I don't work with Umbraco daily it is less than 10% of my work and I never touch the core source. I work with it as a dev like you do.

The difference *I think* is that I have a "can do" atttitude. Where the docs are lacking, I contribute and help to improve them rather than complain about them.

The project homepage isn't at all ambiguous. It says "4.5 with the new schema" - what more information do you need?

The source code on codeplex contains both versions - if you can't find the newer version it is down to your own lack of knowledge rather than anything else.

    What is "scare" information?

I can't do anything about the broken links. I'm not a forum admin.

    Darren,

The point was that many of you are more comfortable with the ins and outs of the project becuase you actively develop it, or for it. Many things that you take for granted have yet to be learned by many of us. The documentation is very scattered and there have been MANY changes in the core and upgrade procedures.

A "can do" attitude only gets you so far when time is limited. umbraco information is spread over at least 2 forums that are no longer "connected" by any common search other than google and the current forum is certainly not an ideal means for gather information.

I love umbraco, but frustration is starting to take over, and i am a fairly capable programmer and system administrator. It has taken me nearly 48 hours of steady work to upgrade a fairly simple site from 3.x to 4.5.2 and I am still having a pile of problems. I have read no less than 10 different documents regarding the procedure, none of which match. That is a problem. The official docs (in their two or 3 different forms and locations) are not complete and each "blog" or "wiki" post on the subject has different steps. Older V3 to V4.0 docs are linked from the old forum and no longer exist. The new docs ignore the existance of 3.x installations. Each document lists different config setting to change and/or folders or files to delete. This is a HUGE problem.

Again, the broken links are just the icing on the cake of frustration.

Please don't take my gripes as personal.. they are not at all. You have done fine work with your add-ons and packages. I just see this project getting bigger and bigger and the docs are not even close to keeping up and instead are a flyover that leave the details to the end user, assuming they have intimate knowledge of .NET assemblies, tinyMCE and XSLT.

Type: "scare: was to be "scarce".

Thanks for the response (honestly)... I will go back to digging for information now and see if I can get my 4.5.2 back office working properly so that I can use your uComment package.

I don't take anything personally don't worry about that.

We've all been through the frustrations and processes that you are having issues with now. I still get frustrated with Umbraco on a regular basis.
