I am new to Umbraco and have inherited an existing site 3-4 years old. One of our users has just come to me and asked why her PDFs are freely available if Googled by name, but their containing folder in Umbraco is not - ie she has to log in to get to the folder.
Within the Umbraco Admin system I can see how to set permissions for the pages but not for individual files
Can I set permissions within Umbraco so that this cannot happen?
If those pdfs are inserted as links in content nodes then they will be available as well. In fact google is spidering them becuase they are referenced from content pages which are publicly accessible. I would query her to see if she has inserted links to them in her content which is public if so then that is why you can see them.
Also when you say containing folder do you mean in the media section or a content node in umbraco?
Protecting files (PDFs) from Google access
Hi All
I am new to Umbraco and have inherited an existing site 3-4 years old. One of our users has just come to me and asked why her PDFs are freely available if Googled by name, but their containing folder in Umbraco is not - ie she has to log in to get to the folder.

Can I set permissions within Umbraco so that this cannot happen?
Hopefully somebody has an answer
Best regards
Dave
Perhaps you could upload a robots.txt file and tell it not to index that folder?
Tom
