i keep getting this error when i try saving a member.
i dont have any special dataypes or anything, just standard textstrings.

Try reinitializing IIS, publish the entire site to refresh cahe.
Refresh the members node.

yes i had a property called 'email' which was conflicting with the email property umbraco has by default.
That's fixed it. I had the exact same issue.
