Sometimes it is needed to find picture file in media. I know the name of file but there are a lot of nodes included other nodes. So I spend lots of time for searching needed file.
Maybe there is some search function for this reason?
Is it the name of the Media node, or the path and and filename that you know ?
There's a helper class in uComponents to retrieve Meida by name, or by XPath, but it wouldn't be hard to adapt it to get Media by a Url (perhaps this method should be added?)
Just thought, probably an obvious question, but if it's in via the Umbraco admin interface that you want to find media, have you tried the search box in the top left in the media section ? That'll find media by it's node name, but unfortunately doens't seem to return results from a filename.

what version of umbraco are you using as the backend search in media i believe only works in 4.5.2
