On my website I introduce potential clients to the concept of a CMS. These are usually people who have never heard of one and therefore need to be sold the benefits in a way they can understand.
My current pitch regarding the use of some other products can be seen here but now that I have adopted Umbraco I want to replace it with the good points of Umbraco and why you should choose it over other products.
Usually I'll go to the website for the product and find a suitable sales pitch there that I can copy because there's no point me re-inventing the wheel and you'd think the product website would do a good job at selling itself.
Not the Umbraco website though it seems. I've had a look and can't seem to find anything that looks like a decent sales pitch for the product from the point of view of a potential website owner. I think the site is missing an opportunity by not targetting these potential customers but I don't want to discuss that. What I would like to know is am I right or have I missed it somewhere?
In my humble opinion: it really depends on who you're targetting with your site though. Is it really important that potential (non-technical) customers know which CMS it is that you're going to be using? Just make sure the CMS is doing what they need to be doing: create content in the easiest way possible for that particular client. Some clients may know a lot of buzzwords and names of other CM systems, but it is your job as an expert to tell them what is best for them, be it Umbraco or something else.
Yes, that's the page I was looking for. Unsure why I couldn't find it myself.
Like you say, in some cases people don't care what CMS is used or even know why it's useful to have one in place. In other cases though and this applies to my day job where I'm working with more commercial CMS products they've usually already chosen the CMS themselves and are looking for a partner to implement it.
I think in either case it's good to re-assure them your going to use a great product that will almost certainly do what the want and is well supported.
