Ability to disable content authoring temporarily

Is there a way, or could it be created, a way to temporarily disable content editing and authoring? Say you needed to lock things down for server maintenance or a backup or outage.  Sure, we can block the Umbraco folder access during that period, but it would be nice if we could flip a switch in the backend.

    Hi Connie

If you're locking the server down I guess I will not be accessible? So are you thinking in terms of making sure users who are logged in, once you start doing maintanenance should not be able to create content? Or am I misunderstanding your question?

For instance, this weekend, we are moving the site to new hardware.  We don't want anyone editing content on the old copy.
