    Complete newbie panic

Ok, so I think this may sound completely ridiculous but I am a complete newbie to everything web design related. I have been thrown in the deep end and am having to discover how to even speak the language in this new world – starting with how to use Umbraco.

I have never used it before… changing and creating new content seems pretty straightforward (I’m working on updating an old website with the creator having just been fired so no one to ask questions to) but there are some things I have no idea how to do.

Is there a Umbraco for dummies manual out there somewhere?

The first thing I am trying to do is archive all our news articles – we have articles dating back to 2007.

Is there any way to create one archive folder that will show as such in the site (so clicking on it will gain the viewer access to all 2007 – 2009 articvles) and then having everything from 2010 onwards visible as normal?

Hi FrogBear, firstly welcome to Umbraco!

For the beginners stuff ... spend a little time watching the Sitebuilder introduction videos on Umbraco.tv, (they are free):

    http://umbraco.com/help-and-support/video-tutorials/introduction-to-umbraco

If you want to progress further... then invest in an Umbraco.tv subscription ... thats not me trying to push you into spending money, think of it as saving yourself time!

Also download the Editors Manual too!

As for specifics about the archive folders... take a look at the AutoFolders package.  You'll still need to learn how to display the content using templates and macros (in XSLT, .NET user-controls or Razor).

My best advice is don't try to run before you can walk. Watch the videos, ask specific questions - the community with help wherever it can.

    Cheers, Lee.
