I'm totally new to Umbraco, so please excuse my ignorance!
One of our clients has their website developed using Umbraco 4 - they have asked us tp produce a micro-site that sits behind their registration wall. It will need to be totally different in terms of look and feel as well as functionality.
Will it be best to produce a separate installation of Umbraco or run as part of the main installation.
No need to create another installation. You can easily create another site in the umbraco backoffice.
Regarding the look and feel it should really just be a matter of creating some other templates, which can be used on already existing document types (asuming you'll be using the same document types of course, otherwise you can easily create specific document types for that specific site).
You need to make sure that the IIS has been setup properly pointing to the correct site and that the "manage hostnames" has been set properly on the root nodes for the sites within Umbraco.
Thanks for the quick response. I've been reading up on this all morning, so this does look like the best way to proceed! One question though, can you use the same memberships for the microsite - we want to have users who have registered with the main site access the new one?
I guess it's a matter of setting up the restriction on one of the content nodes and then choose, which member groups are allowed access to certain areas of the site. Is this what you're thinking about or have you made some custom stuff?
Today is the first day I've looked at Umbraco, so I've not made any custom stuff - I'll be using the built in ACL facilities. It looks good though, can't wait to get stuck in!
Must admit, I've been impressed by the community support here - I've posted a couple of questions today and have had a response very quickly. I'm really looking forward to getting started properly.
Very happy to hear that. That is exactly what the community is all about - being friendly and helping each other out and of course learning from each other.
I'm sure you will get more positive experiences like this in here :-)
Adding microsite to existing Umbraco site
Hi Folks,
I'm totally new to Umbraco, so please excuse my ignorance!

Hopefully you can help.
Thanks.

I hope these pointers make sense?

Hi Darren
Yes I can't see why that should not be possible.
I guess it's a matter of setting up the restriction on one of the content nodes and then choose, which member groups are allowed access to certain areas of the site. Is this what you're thinking about or have you made some custom stuff?

Hi Jan,
Today is the first day I've looked at Umbraco, so I've not made any custom stuff - I'll be using the built in ACL facilities. It looks good though, can't wait to get stuck in!
I'll try what you're suggesting.
Darren
Hi Darren
Ok, then I can't see why it should not work then.
Please don't hesitate to ask for help if something does not make sense or you're simply just stuck.
And welcome to the fun world of Umbraco :-)

Thanks, Jan.
