I have just gone through the installation process as a complete beginner. When I get to the part where I'm invited to apply a 'starter' skin and click install nothing happens (no error is even reported). I can do nothing in the UI that allows me to start building a site. My web hosts declined responsibility (fair enough) and told me to come here.
My site is for a school in Belgium and is called mrspoors.org. It is still pointing at the Umbraco default page because I have no content. I'm not a hacker or much of a developer and just want to start making a site.
Thank you for the prompt reply! I didn't even get to finish my cup of tea! I have full control of the site database etc. The hosts indicate that all permissions are good but I'm happy to follow any advice (even reinstalling if that's needed). I can bring up a view of Umbraco but if I click on the Content (node?) nothing loads.
Well, mostly the replies on our are coming in pretty fast :-)
Hmm...so you managed to finish the installation? But did you have a succesfull installation with a starter kit or did you make a clean installation without a starter kit?
If you have not chosen a starter kit it makes perfect sense.
Ok, that's really odd. What version of Umbraco did you install?
When you go to the settings section and expand the "document type" folder is i then empty? And if you go to the "developer" section and expand the packages folder and have a look at the installed packages is that empty as well?
Ok, sounds like Umbraco did install but that the starter kit just did'nt make it for some reason.
So I guess you would really like som foundation to get started with Umbraco and get rid of the frustration you're probably feeling right now.
I suggest you go to the developer section and find the package repository. Go to starter kits and select the "creative website starter package (cws)". I think this is a good starting point, which illustrates the different concepts within Umbraco.
I know this does not explain what has happened during your installation and unfortunately I don't think I'm able to figure out what went wrong. But you should be able to install the mentioned package and benefit from it I think.
But you can also download the package from this site, but it's easier to do it whithin Umbraco. But not all packages are included in the repository. I think it needs to have a least received 15 votes before it can be installed directly from within Umbraco.
Don't hesitate to ask further if you're in doubt of anything.
Thank you. I'll bash away that for a while to see what I can do. Is there a way I can 'vote' for your generous help? A button to click on or something like that?
No immediate reply needed as my wife has called for me to sleep! Tomorrow morning is fine!
The developer section in my installation doesn't have anything in it (apart from the word developer :-))
I've downloaded the CWS zip file but it's not clear how I can access this from inside Umbraco to install the package (I'm familiar with the idea from a few tries with Joomla). Perhaps my Umbraco installation needs to be wiped clean and I must start again.
You need to achieve 70 karma points here in the forum's to be able to vote up answers from people - untill then you can only mark posts as solved. And a post should not be marked as solved before it has been so.
But I take "mental karma" as well as karma-votes ;-)
Ok, if you don't see anything besides the developer folder then there is something wrong. Could you post a screendumb?
I think you need to call the hosting provider again to make sure that permissions have been set correctly. Is the host providing full or medium trust? And what is the app pool setting? It must be set to integrated mode and is .NET 4 installed?
I've sent the questions to the hosts and am awaiting their response. Rather than pictures, I am happy (if you are) to give you direct access to the installation so that you can see the behaviour live rather than second hand (multiple times!).
[* Edited by admin - removed due to security risk]
I can change the security later (when something's working :-))
In their installation notes the hosts asked me to make some changes to web.config before uploading the files to the server, so perhaps that's a good place to look.
Ww have checked the permissions at these are correct. The hosting runs under a medium trust, you can find out more information on this at http://www.pipeten.info/2008/06/net-medium-trust/. The server is Windows 2003 with IIS 6 and .net 4 is installed and enabled on your account...integrated mode is Windows 2008 and IIS 7 specific.
I have not been able to move forward on this and (understandably, I hope) my frustration is mounting. You kindly made a reference to an article by Sebastian Janssen but I have not been able to find this. Was there a simple change to web.config that might work?
I have tried and tried to get something to work but now I can't even log in to Umbraco! I have asked my hosts to 'blow away' the installation so that I can start again from scratch. I am a bit down about all of this but let's see what happens. What is the most stable version that I can download and what changes exactly should I make to the web.config file before I try to install?
My hosts (Pipeten) and I have re-installed my entire website (empty of course) and Umbraco from scratch. We get to exactly the same position where the skins will not install and the final step of the installation does not occur. If I go into the edit section of Umbraco there are no 'nodes' to allow the creation of content.
I have made a screenshot but this editor does not work very well and will not upload images.
I'm using IE9 and yes, both times we have installed Umbraco we have some sort of GUI shell but no functionality,. Each time I go to mrspoors.org I get to the same place and cannot add anything - the 'nodes' do not exist apart from the names such as 'Content' etc.
Please accept my apologies for the slow reply - I've been in hospital for surgery - I'm sure it has nothing to do with trying to install Umbraco! :o)
I guess I'm running out of ideas here...can't figure out what happens or where you should look. The medium trust installation is not what I'm best at unfortunately...I hope other of the bright minds in here come accross this post of yours so you can hopefully get this resolved.
However, over the last couple of weeks I have tried many times to install umbraco and all have been unsuccessful with the same outcome - no nodes in the tree on any tab. I have downloaded the latest umbraco build (4.7.0.378) and ensured to "unblock" it before unzipping with winrar; made the web.config changes as instructed and "Selected no skin when prompted" (Step 9.6 in the installation guide) but still no joy. PipeTen TechSupport have confirmed the permissions on the files are set up correctly and they assure me that they are hosting other websites that are uing Umbraco without any problems. I thought I was the only person having difficulties, however this post shows that I am not.
This is quite embrassing for me because I am a web professional that uses umbraco regularly in the the day job, and have had no problem setting up multiple installations of umbraco on a dedicated server. I have been impressed with its power and flexibility and thought it would be a great foundation for building my personal website.
John, I've been in touch regularly with Pipeten who have worked to address the issue. The last response from them was this:
"We have been looking into this Umbraco for you and have discovered that the
problem exists with somewhere with 4.6.1 and 4.7 running under a medium trust.
These have been successfully installed running Full Trust on our servers (only
possible on our dedicated servers).
We have managed to install and run
version 4.5.2 under Medium Trust on our servers. You will still need to change
the settings in the web.config as outlined in the blog post. You will find that
some features still do not work and cause a runtime error usually cause by an
security exception do to it not being able to run under medium trust. You can
download version 4.5.2 from the following link
http://umbraco.codeplex.com/releases/view/51165"
Sorry for the delay, I've been in hospital (not related to the stress of installing Umbraco - I hope!)
Umbraco Installation Does Nothing at all!

Tom
Hi Tom
Did you have success with creating the database during the process?
And have you asked the host to check if the proper permissions have been given? If it's just hanging there something is obviosly wrong.
Do you have access to some kind of control board or do you only have FTP access?
/Jan

I chose a starter kit (sweetas) but nothing happened! No reaction from the system at all! That's my problem!
The preview box opened and I then clicked on install.

Everything is empty. The interface is there but there's nothing behind it!
Umrraco version 4.6.2 (from web.config)

Hi Tom
Try having a look at the post by Sebastian Janssen in here - if you make this modification to your web.config file does it work then?
/Jan

Was there a link to the article by Sebastian? I tried searching for his name on the forum but couldn't find a reference.

D'oh! Seems like I forgot to paste the link when I answered...
Will try to find it once again
/Jan
Hi Tom
Here it is: http://our.umbraco.org/forum/getting-started/installing-umbraco/10431-Installing-Umbraco-on-shared-hosting-or-Medium-trust
Perhaps you can skim through this post by Benjamin Howard where he explains about medium trust in Umbraco. (He's the guy who made it possible).
http://our.umbraco.org/forum/getting-started/installing-umbraco/6059-Umbraco-in-Medium-Trust
/Jan
Jan,
The line that should be uncommented does not exist in the web.config file on my server!
<!-- <trust level="Medium" originUrl=".*" />-->
Which section should I put it in (or does it not matter)?
Tom

Hi Tom
Yeah, the editor is playing tricks on the users sometimes :-(
However it should be possible to upload screendumps though. What browser are you using to do this?
Let me get this right...you don't succeed with installing a skin, but Umbraco is install anyway just being empty?
/Jan

Hi guys,
Have you found a resolution to this problem? I have exactly the same issue and its driving me nuts.
I signed up with Pipeten because they advertise they support hosting umbraco and have a simple and recent installation guide for it:
http://www.pipeten.info/2011/01/tutorial-umbraco-installation/
However, over the last couple of weeks I have tried many times to install umbraco and all have been unsuccessful with the same outcome - no nodes in the tree on any tab. I have downloaded the latest umbraco build (4.7.0.378) and ensured to "unblock" it before unzipping with winrar; made the web.config changes as instructed and "Selected no skin when prompted" (Step 9.6 in the installation guide) but still no joy.
