no user guide per se, but installing the 'runway' basic site or going to the developer area and isntalling the website wizard package are both very helpful in giving you a lay of the land.
it is important to note that there are several toolbar buttons that will insert seamingly complex items into your templates.
there are also some good reads over on umbraco.org in the documentation area... check em out and report back if you are still having issues.
one of the beauties of umbraco is that there really isn't a mandatory start point for a website project -- meaning you are not locked in, but it is easy to understand that being in that situation can be a bit overwhelming for newcomers to umbraco.
never hesitate to ask any questions, help is only a post away in most cases.
Like Bob said there isn't a real user guide. When I started with Umbraco I found this guide that helped me with understanding the basics http://ismail.umbraco.net/media/134/umbracodoc-manual.pdf it's based on 2.1 but a lot of the concepts are still the same. I think the only thing that is really changed in V4 are the Templates(using ASP.NET Masterpages now and the icons are much nicer).
User Guide?
Is there a decent user guide to Umbraco? I've installed it ok but am now sitting here looking at the sparse user interface and scratching my head.
