    Master list of Umbraco features

    Hi everyone,
I was searching the forum today to find out if Umbraco could do a specific task (personalizing information based on members), and I didn't have luck.

    So I had this idea...

Why not make a master list of all the features that we developers have created using Umbraco?

If this already exists, then please excuse me. But if not, I envision not just a list of packages, but also smaller features. The corresponding code to go with it would be even better, but the main idea here is to have a master list, as in "Here are the 500 features developers have created using Umbraco" - and have that in a post somewhere, or maybe even on the main Umbraco Web site to help give prospective users and developers a better idea of what Umbraco can do!

Please let me know your thoughts. And if you know the answer to my first question above (personalilzed content) I'd love to hear from you, too!

I would even volunteer to organize this list if that would help. It'd be the least I could do to return the favor of having this convenient list.

    Thank you all!

the crazy thing about umbraco is that this list is ever growing and the solutions are kinda like snowflakes... no two are exactly alike.

let's take a news or faq section for example... dependent upon client needs, a news section could have any number of approaches to it.

the more tangible list is the list of product features that will enable you to virtually create any kind of site feature you want.

now, when it comes to personalization of content, via xslt you can access specific information about the current logged in user. you can extend a user to have things like personalized content in addition to name, address, etc.

there in rests the beauty of umbraco.

i get asked all the time what umbraco can do out of the box -- and i reply by asking what box? -- i tell my clients, that they can go and download umbraco and click through the 5 installation steps, install runway from the installer and then add some items.

the site will be white, with a grey h1 site title, it will have dynamic navigation, a simple jquery gallery, jquery faq section and a contact form.

i guess i can chip into this infinite list by quickly outlining the number of features i have created for my umbraco sites.

    1. jquery, mulit-level navigation
    2. playback of internal and external flash video
    3. multi-level galleries
    4. polls
    5. forums
    5. podcast blog
    6. standard blog
    7. e-commerce via paypal
    8. event registration
    9. current weather via xml feed from weather .com
    10. rss feeds - both serving and consuming
    11. flash integration via xml for numerous applications
    12. mp3 library playback
    13. custom registration and permissions based viewing
    14. custom mail application
    15. drive custom widgets for use outside of umbraco from umbraco
    16. generate html and text output for import into custom mail engines
    17. display twitter feeds/posts
    18. post to twitter based on node publish
    19. manage a shortUrl application to display ads on top of requested pages via link through social media.

and i know i have seen many, many times this list outside of my creation.

visit nibble.be for a pretty impressive list of things that can be done with umbraco.

let's keep this conversation going, because some people can definitely use this list to help promote what umbraco can do.

Thanks, Bob. Yes, your list is exactly what I was looking for. I agree, it could be a huge list. But if we can maybe break down into categories it can at least be navigable Example: There might be 25 different kinds of Galleries, but if they are grouped together than you can a) quickly scan and see that yes, Umbraco can create a gallery and b) there are 25 different ways to do it. I think that would be helpful.

Here are some of my features so far:

    - Blog with and without comments (SycamoreYPS.com)
    - Home page that shows the latest blog only (SycamoreYPS.com)
    - Pockets of content that can by syndicated throughout the site (SycamoreYPS.com)
    - Directory of Members of an organization, sortable by three different categories (SycamoreYPS.com)
    - Form that e-mails to a recipient and also puts the information in Umbraco (SycamoreYPS.com)
    - Gallery using ImageGen and Lightbox (www.OrtegaStudios.com)
    - Page that shows all files from a given media directory. Can be sorted in any fashion. (FishmanPR.com)

If others contribute to this list, it would be great if you can also include URLs that show examples as I did.
