Try installing the "blog for umbraco 4" from the packages repository. (Developer > packages)

Edit: And check this for more info - http://www.nibble.be/?p=57

I'd need to really know what you're trying to develop, but a good place to start is in the

    books section
    ttp://umbraco.org/documentation/books/

    The api docs
    http://umbraco.org/apiDocs/index.html

    Community Search
    http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=006828407427845235189%3Au1fygyy_s54

And a few blogs such as http://nibble.be lean more towards the development side of thing.

The forums are a great resource with some very helpful and knowledgeable people but it helps to have a specific question first.

You can install CWS2 to give you an idea of a site with custom controls and datatypes and looking through the code should help a lot http://www.creativewebspecialist.co.uk/2009/03/06/creative-website-starter-%28cws2%29-for-umbraco-is-released.aspx (also a great umbraco-focused blog)

    Good luck
    Dan
