How do i force umbraco to redirect from / to /en/home?
the root / is empty and sowing an error.

Master is the entire website root
I'm not sure you need the Master DocType.
If you move your 'en' folder under Content your problem should go away.
it is not working. I get the error:
and the site is not functioning at all, it goes to install page...

Sorry, my bad, I didn't see 'Umbraco 5' in the subject title (it's early here).
Though coming from Umbraco 4 I can't see a reason to change the structure for 5.
Are you working from the sample Umbraco 5 site?

Have you tried "umbracoRedirect"?
if not, you can try and choose data type "content picker".

it is not working. I get the error:
The layout page "Layout.cshtml" could not be found at the following path: "~/Views/Umbraco/Layout.cshtml".
and the site is not functioning at all, it goes to install page...
