404 error handling is unreliable?

umbraco v 4.0.2.1 (Assembly version: 1.0.3441.17657)

I've been experimenting with the 404 error handling mechanism that i can activate in the configuration file (  <span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";" lang="EN-US">/config/umbracosettings.config) but have run into some issues...</span>

copying 4 lines of text from notepad in a remote desktop environment doesn't seem to work very well ... is there any way i can edit my post?

Nope Rik, editing is currently not supported... it seems you've been copying from word.

I always copy'n'paste code into notepad, then copy'n'paste again here in this input box, does work pretty well.

Hi Rik,

I had the same issue with my site. I use flat url's and didn't want the .aspx versions being indexed. To get around this I put some code in my masterpage to strip the .aspx off the current url and build a canonical tag with that shortned url.

The pages will still display if .aspx is added, however google and the other major search engines will all respect the canonical tag and you won't run into duplicate content issues.

I think it's possible to create you own HTTP handler and then do a 301 rederict to the correct page, http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=93633

You could probably also do it with the urlrewriting tool.

Something like

<add name="extensionrewrite" 
    virtualUrl="^~/(.*).aspx(.*)" 
    rewriteUrlParameter="ExcludeFromClientQueryString" 
    destinationUrl="~/$1$2"
    redirect="Application"
    redirectMode="Permanent"
    ignoreCase="true" />

I haven't tested this, but it should give you a 301 redirect of urls with extenstions.Fore example:

example.com/page/subpage.aspx?test=test -> example.com/page/subpage?test=test

One case isn't handled by umbraco correctly, and this is then the extention of an existing page is replaced by ".html", this doesn't throw a 404 but a funky server error:

It does work fine if i extend the file extension by random characters...

Well, it looks like the .html extension is not mapped to the aspnet isapi filter. And if the request doesn't go to .net, then Umbraco can't handle it.

Is the .html extension mapping to something else?

Thanks for your replies,

.html isn't mapped to anything, a quick search on google shows many people having the same issue but no working solutions (our sysadmin has tried a few of the available "solutions" without success)

If anyone has a working solution, i'd appreciate further help!

If your using IIS use Custom errors on the IIS Entry and set the file to point at an offline 404.html file.

You can do this for 404/403 etc..

This is more of a note for myself but if you still haven't got this resolved push me to look into forwarding .html requests to .net engine and I will try out a few ideas I have around this.

I'm having a related problem. I'd like to have a common 404 page to take care of all bad pages, aspx, html, jpg, etc. I also have multiple sites set-up, so I have created my own 404 handler per this post (http://our.umbraco.org/forum/core/general/7807-404-with-multiple-sites).

However, I'm only getting .aspx pages requests from my handler. .html, .shtml or other static file pages are handled by IIS instead. I am running windows server 2008 and IIS7 in integrated mode. So those static files are handled by .NET. I can also verify that they are handled by .NET because the UrlRewriting module properly redirects .html pages. However, I can't seem to get Umbraco's 404 handler to process .html requests.

Any ideas?
