File picker - 'insert/edit link' in the rich text editor

I'm creating an Umbraco site for a client who has large amounts of documents and who manages these using FTP. So I have to integrate this pre-existing folder/file structure into the new Umbraco installation, and in the content for the various pages of the site there are links to these files. Is there a way to change the rich text editor so that when using the 'insert/edit link' button, it lists the files on the server (not just the ones within the media section) and allows the user to select them? Importing all of the files into the media section isn't really an option because the client often uploads lots of documents at a time. If anybody has any ideas then that would be great.

    Thanks.

At Codegarden there was a presentation about using Umbraco on high traffic websites (for Condé Nast). They had integrated an asset management system (AMS) into Umbraco.

I think it would be a rather complex project. For example, if they upload many items, how are they organized? Is there naming conventions? Will you need thumbnail generation? Etc., etc.
Sound to me like you would already be better off with using a seperate AMS to deal with all those files.

Of course, if push comes to shove, you could just read out the upload location's file structure from disk and do something with that. It all depends on how advanced you want to go.

I was more thinking of something quite basic - have you ever used FCK Editor? That has a really basic link/file picker that just lists all of the files & folders below a certain directory and lets you select/insert them via the rich text editor interface. My client looks after the naming conventions, and thumbnails aren't required as its mainly PDFs, Word, & Excel docs. I was hoping maybe somebody had integrated something like that before?

I've found some examples of people integrating the FckEditor file manager with TinyMCE:

I don't have time to try it out with the Umbraco TinyMCE just at the moment, but I'll have a go later on.
