Copying a live Umbraco Instance into a dev environment

Hi I wonder if you could help me out here......

I'm fairly new to the umbraco way of developing and to cut a long story short I've created a website on a live envirnoment and what i'm trying to do is copy everything that I've done into a development one. I've tried creating an installation package, downloading and installing this package into a local install of umbraco, when I did this the install failed saying that the number of requests is too long and i should check my application hosts file for mre information (I can't find this file) and then I tried to ftp down all of the files and run them from Web Matrix when I attempt to run from this folder I get the error.

HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error

The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.

The configuration section 'system.web.extensions' cannot be read because it is missing a section declaration

I'm running Umbraco 4.9.0 with an internal Microsoft SE database installation.

Could anyone give me some advice please?

    Thanks,

    Craig.

    Craig,

Take a copy of the database and website files from live and copy over to dev. Install the db over writing the dev one.  Another option is to install courier on both servers then courier from live to dev.

    Regards

    Thanks Ismail,

I'm presuming that you mean create another blank Umbraco application using the same settings and then overwrite all of the files with the copies from the live server.

If this is the case then that hasn't worked!!!

Bit clueless as to why though, as I would have thought that I'd just be able to run it as the folder structure was the same

    Thanks
