Best solution for adding ecommerce to existing site
hi
i have a client who would like to add a few purchaseable items to their existing site and i am wondering what is the best approach.
there are a few areas they want to address which could be summarised as:
a page with a few [3 or 4] physical products to sell [possibly with variants]
event tickets [possibly with variants]
enrolement fees [possibly with variants]
The payment fullfillment would be via PayPal.
There seem to be, within these areas, two types of payment.
click to buy a quantity, go to paypal for completion
submit a form, gathering details, ideally into Contour, submit payment along with that registration, or immediately after
Can anyone offer an opinion on the best way to achieve this within an existing site [Umbraco v4.9.1]
I have looked at, but not trialled, uCommerce, TeaCommerce, but they both seem to me to be prebuilt sites into which i would need to migrate content. what i would prefer is a solution allowing me to add items into an existing site.
TeaCommerce do provide the starter kit, but you don't need to base your site on that. You can install the TeaCommerce package into your site and then build your eCommerce solution. This is the approach I took and it worked fine.
What I did was create a separate development (play) site using the TeaCommerce starter kit. This enabled me to get a grip on how the functionality worked. Then I copied files across to the real site and modified as needed.
Kinda like building from the ground up (product pages first, initial checkout page next, etc , etc) but using the starterkit as a jump start / reference point.
We didn't need to capture payment on the site (only order capturing) but the above worked well and provided a good learning curve on how the functionality works.
Yeah I have some experience of uCommerce. I used it before they released the Razor demo store and again it was a bit of work to get it off the ground - you had to write all your own macros for things like product displays, checkout etc..but i found the framework very extensible and once you get your head around how it all works it is a rock-solid platform.
The back end order management can be a little limited but it depends what you need it to do.
I would check out the documentation at http://www.ucommerce.dk and download the demo (razor or xslt) stores to have a look at how it all hangs together.
I have looked at TeaCommerce, not yet at uCommerce, but for stage one of the project, we have ended up going with a fairly simple PayPal labs solkution.
as the project matures, we may come back to it, if so, i may well be in touch.

Hi Fergus

Thanks Nigel.
I will have a look at TC over the weekend.
Anyone else have any experience of uCommerce in this sort of scenario??

Thanks Kenny, much appreciated.
[seems my weekend will be a bit busier than i had hoped]
Hi Fergus,
Let me know if you need any info on uCommerce. I'm more than happy to help.
You can check out the Razor store at www.avenue-clothing.com.
Thanks.
