    Hi Kate

An altTemplate is an "Alternative Template". As the name implies it's used as an alternative to the one template already being used.

The benefit of an alternative template is that it can be referenced directly in the address bar by it's alias like http://www.mysite.com/alternativetemplate.aspx it can also be referenced using the ?alttemplate paramter like http://www.mysite.com?alttemplate=alternativetemplate. It does not need to be tied to a documentype.

It can be used for many different things. For instance it can be used to generate an RSS feed of the news on a specific site.

Tim Geyssens wrote a blog post about this 5 years ago that explains it in a bit more detail here http://www.nibble.be/?p=42

    Hope this helps.

    /Jan
