Searchable content type list in backend

I am new to Umbraco. I have signed up for the video tutorials and am working through those and am higly impresson with the easy of use and the adaptability of the product. I have been working with .NET for 6 years and I am comfortable with that side of it and with the XSLT.

I am hoping to use Umbraco for a client web application. This application is an online version of a newspaper. The only issue I seem to have in matching Umbraco to the functional requirements is when it comes to managing the news items on the back end.

Is there a way to provide a searchable gridview of document types rather than just the list of document types in the tree? My site will have News Section document types with News Article document types inserted as children. Is there any way of clicking on a News Section document and having the list of news items appear on the right with search filters?

Any help or guidence with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Liam,

You could start looking at a package I've created a while back. It's a usercontrol and comes with the source. What you could do then is watching the videos about custom sections and trees and use this control as a basis for your requirements. Within a small time period (a week or so) I will upload the updated version that is based on a datagrid.

    Hope it helps you,

    Richard

    Wow! That's nice!

Would it be possible to bind that control to an Umbraco DataType?

I am thinking of something like the native "Folder browser": you could add such a datatype to a tab in your news main folder document type and use it to list all the news in that folder in a grid.

You could also configure the datatype to add a search feature for custom properties used by your news items. (Title, date, ecc.)

    HI Marco,

Thanks for the feedback. I will implement a cutsom action in the future so you can select it from a document but it will not be in the release of this week. Another thing that will be inluded in the release of this week is the ability to search into properties of the document type. I've implemented that feature for a client of mine and he's very happy with that.

    Cheers,

    Richard

Thanks for your response, I really very happy that your "small time period" resolves to this week :)

    TIA,
