Is There A Step By Step Guide To Adding A New Dashboard Section?

I have found this....

But I have no idea what each part of the XML is? what does the <areas> section refer to?

Anyone point me to a step by step on adding a section to the dashboard manually without doing with a package? As I'm only playing at the mo...

Sorry think I have found it now - I'm guessing I just edit the Dashboard.config file in the config folder. Although what does areas mean??
```
    <areas>
        <area>default</area>
        <area>content</area>
    </areas>
```
