We have a client that we're moving from a custom cms to umbraco, but they're particularly nervous about media management since the last system (cuteeditor) died under the weight of their mountain of media.
So, does anyone have any stats on usage of the media library? Anyone with an absurdly large number of media items?
E.g. We have a client (still on v3) that has over 700 items in the media library, and becase they've structured their folders reasonable well it is still quite fast. Does anyone have any figures, or reasons from a technical perspective why they shouldn't worry about using the media library for upwards of 2000+ items?
I agree with Dirk completely. GetMedia(), especially if you set the 'true' flag, can be really slow. Otherwise, all the rules of content organization apply to the media section as well... not only is it slow to have to expand a couple hundred nodes in the media tree but almost impossible for users to find the one they want, so you should organize carefully.
Front-end performance I'm not so worried about, they're just currently dealing with a very slow admin but if it's fine with proper structure then full steam ahead.
Media Library - does anyone have usage stats?
Hi All
We have a client that we're moving from a custom cms to umbraco, but they're particularly nervous about media management since the last system (cuteeditor) died under the weight of their mountain of media.
So, does anyone have any stats on usage of the media library? Anyone with an absurdly large number of media items?

Dan,
I'd only be worried by:
- Poor media content structure, as having too many child nodes would decrease performance significantly (if not using v4.1 yet - which I assume)
- Calls to GetMedia() in your code/xslt's (Make sure to optimize those) as these tend to query the db quite a lot!
Other than that, all media files are stored on disk, so what's to worry?
Just my thoughts on this.
Cheers,
D/irk

Perfect.
