I might be going mad, but when I was playing around I thought I saw a way of pre-populating a drop down list with child node names? So basically I would select the parent node, and the drop down list would be populated with any child nodes - And I could use this as a dataType?

I believe http://our.umbraco.org/projects/axendo-ultimate-picker-xpath should do what you're after?
