    Creating your first page(s)

    Hi all,

Just installed Umbraco as an alternative to a prepriatory CMS we currently use - and as thought, with open source i am completely stumped with how to do anything, while trying to follow the seemingly disjointed support docs.

The CMS looks superb, especially after installing one of the demo starter packs, so i am really looking forward to creating site(s) with it.

This leads me to my question - how on earth do you create a page that actually displays? is there a tutorial somewhere that takes you through steps to create templates/doc types & pages???? If so, WOW it is well hidden.... ;-)

    any guidence would be great....

    cheers

    Hi Darren,

    Welcome to umbraco!

As to your question, have a look at umbraco.tv (comes at a small price - subscription based so cancelation is possible at any time) which has lots of useful video's to get you started. Or have a look at Warren's CWS package which can be installed from the repository (Developer section), which shows the basic building blocks of building a site in umbraco.

Ask any question here in the forum, and you'll get answers pretty fast!

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    /Dirk

    Hi Dirk,

The point of using open source was to avoid paying for anything at this stage - i assume this is why there are no beginers guides on the wiki to get started?

    Regards

    Darren

    Hi Darren

There should be a few guides to get you started and the forum can be very helpful.

    Try these links:

    http://www.blogfodder.co.uk/post/A-Complete-Newbies-Guide-To-Umbraco-CMS.aspx
    http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/how-tos/umbraco-absolute-beginner-tutorial
    http://umbraco.org/documentation/books/document-types-explained
and http://umbraco.org/documentation/books/xslt-basics (if you need some xslt helpers).

There is a learning curve, but it's worth it.  I'd play around a bit more with the starter packs at http://our.umbraco.org/projects/creative-website-starter-%28cws%29 and http://our.umbraco.org/projects/business-website-starter-pack to see how they hang together, then just dive in and see what can be seen.

    Hi Dan,

cheers bud, the absolute one looks great. Just looking for simple explanation as to the basic structure and how to knock the first page(s) together, from there it should all be plain sailing - ultimately if a product takes too long to get to grips with in the first instance then it fails to carry any business-worth in the long run....

    cheers again.

any other guides would be great too.

    Ta.

No problem at all. I'd suggest the books section, browsing the wiki and asking questions as the best way to go forward.  20 euros on on umb.tv subscription is definitely worth the price though...

ultimately if a product takes too long to get to grips with in the
first instance then it fails to carry any business-worth in the long run

perhaps, but despite taking a while to get our heads around and still having some gripes, I wouldn't like to start counting the hours and savings that we've made since switching to developing on umbraco about 1.5yrs ago.

    Good luck
    Dan
