Since you are new to Umbraco I think a good starting point could be take a look a these videos, these are showing the basic conecept if Umbraco including working with CSS, HTML and so on http://umbraco.tv/videos/umbraco-v7/implementor/. Width Umbraco you have full control over your HTML markup, you can use Bootstrap in Umbraco 7, and using a custom template. You are building every thing so it suits your client needs.
