Technically and according to RCF they would be different but as far as I understand no email system today would treat them as different so it probably make sense to make the compare case insensitive.
I will add this to the backlog for upcoming releases.

I have noticed that an e-mail address can be imported in upper and lower case even though it is the same e-mail address
for example:
is already added: [email protected]
will be imported: [email protected]
the end result is: two contacts are entered with the same e-mail address with different spelling.
Can you check this?
